9 Day Itinerary

Day One: Arrival in Leh

IMG_0145Settle in at Guest House. Short excursion to the central market near the PoloField beneath the Royal Palace. Lunch on a rooftop restaurant overlooking the valley. Relax and acclimatize at Guest House. Dinner.

Day Two: Explore Leh climbing to the Shey Palace

Monastery Over LehWalk to the Changspa to climb to the Japanese Stupa above Leh. Walk through the Changspa to the Women’s Center for Chai to see what their projects are and to learn about women’s lives in a Buddhist high altitude culture on the banks of the Indus. Return to the upper Chanspa for dinner with a local family.

Day Three: Monastery Tour

Monastery Below StokKangriDrive to Tiksey Monastery stopping at chortens along the river and going on to Hemis later in the day with a hike to the meditation caves above the monastery. Lunch with the monks above the Indus.

Day Four: Excursion to Nubra Valley

Journey up over the highest motorable pass in the world, the Kardung La. Visit  Diskit on the way to Hundar and the vast sand dunes to go on a short Bactrian camel ride through this high altitude desert to camp in a local village near the Afghan border. Drive back to Guest House in Leh the next morning.

Day Five: Travel to Pangong Lake from Leh

Best Photo EverDrive along the shores of the expansive Pangong Lake bordering China. Stop for ultimate photos in the changing patterns of light as the day passes. Camp in safari tents on the shores of the lake with sumptuous dinner at sunset. Make our way slowly back to Leh in the morning, visiting villages and monsteries along the way.

Day Six: Rest day in Leh with time to explore

Slippy Fish LocksTake the day to explore Leh, it’s craft and street markets. Possible visit to the local shaman. Have lunch in a local restaurant with momos and barley soup, Indian sweets for desert. Check on local festivals. Chai in one of the rooftop restaurants before dinner.

Day Seven:  Hike to Rumbuk

Tarchok,RumbakHike to the valley of Rumbuk through pristine valleys along rivers where it is possible to spot Snow Leopards and Blue Sheep. Stay in Robuk overnight, hike up to Yurutsi Monastery for lunch. Hike out to be picked up along the Indus River. Dinner in Leh.

Day Eight: Short trip to Chushot

Harvest looking tow:the Pass YurutseTravel to Chushot to visit the Bactrian Camel Preserve then walk back to Changlomsar crossing the Indus River to the yoga retreat center there and either stay for the class or head back to the Guest House in Leh for dinner.

Day Nine: Early breakfast, transport to airport

IMG_0032_2_2Final goodbyes to Leh and the Land of the Monasteries. Early breakfast and then transport for the short ride to the airport.
